Parkway – Kitchen

White cabinets aren’t the only way to lighten a kitchen. We took a dark and heavily ornamented style kitchen and transformed it into a beautiful, bright space for entertaining. We opened up an awkwardly small closet space where the refrigerator had been and created the perfect spot for the ovens, a place to feed the dogs, and a small counter-height desk by the window. Placing the rangetop on the island provided room for the refrigerator to be located closer to the sink and made cooking a more social activity.

Special storage for a step stool and shelves for cookbooks are at the far end where we enclosed the radiator and topped it with soapstone. The dramatic herringbone pattern of the porcelain tile floor extends into the original butler’s pantry, which we refinished in black. We fabricated some additional cabinetry for the pantry to match the existing style and expanded the opening into the space so it would feel more connected to the kitchen. The existing door and window trim, which had matched the old dark wood cabinetry, was painted in a grey to compliment the new flooring and countertops.
